Most drivers in the St. Charles, St. Louis, O'Fallon, and Saint Peters areas have had a dashboard light warning or indicator pop up at one point or another. While your first instinct might be to worry upon seeing one of these lights, Nissan Maxima dashboard symbols are your friends!

Dashboard lights let you know when something may have gone wrong and how to fix it. They can also give you an indication of whether you can fix the problem yourself or should visit us at St. Charles Nissan. In this article, we've provided a quick Nissan Maxima dashboard symbol guide to make deciphering your symbols all the simpler!

Warning Lights

It might be tempting to be intimidated by the word warning and the red/amber color of the lights; however, once you know what they all mean and what they're trying to communicate with you, you'll feel completely confident the next time your car tries to tell you something.

Here is a quick list of some of the most common Nissan Maxima warning lights:

Brake Warning Light: Usually pictured as the word BRAKE inside a box, this light indicates that you have an issue with your main braking system, in which case you should pull over and have the issue addressed immediately.

ABS Warning Light: Usually pictured as a box with ABS, this light indicates a problem with your Anti-lock Braking System. In this case, your normal brakes should still be functional; however, you'll still want to bring your Maxima in for brake realignment, repair, and replacement, or any other brake-related Nissan service you may need.

Charge Warning Light: This warning light indicates a low or malfunctioning battery. Pull over and turn off all nonessential electronics; keeping electronics on may interfere with your battery's ability to recharge. Check your maintenance schedule to see if it's about that time for a new battery.

Low Tire Pressure Warning Light: Pictured as an exclamation point surrounded by parentheses, this light indicates that you have a low-pressure or flat tire that needs attention. Learn more about tire pressure here.

Power Steering Warning Light: Pictured as PS inside a box, this light indicates that you have a steering malfunction. In this case, it's generally safest to bring this problem to a certified dealership technician.

Low Fuel Light: Aptly pictured as a gas station pump, this light lets you know that you need to fill up your tank ASAP.

Malfunction and Master Warning Lights: If you see one of these warnings, bring your car to our dealership as soon as possible so we can diagnose it for you.

Indicator Lights

Unlike warning lights, indicator lights typically are alerting you to simple functions that are turned on or off in your vehicle, meaning they don't generally require immediate attention. Nissan Maxima indicator lights include:

Airbag Status Light: Most Nissans, including the Maxima, have occupancy sensors-this is one of those sensors. If you have one or more passengers aboard, this light alerts you that the airbag(s) will be deployed when needed.

Seat Belt Warning Light: One or more of your passengers is not wearing their seatbelt. A chime may accompany this warning. Remind everyone to buckle up, and pull over until they do.

High Beam Indicator: This light turns on to remind you when your high beams are engaged. It should turn off automatically when you disengage your headlights, but if it doesn't, see your dealership.

VDC Indicator/Slip Indicator: When this light is blinking, it indicates that your Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system is on and that conditions may be slick. If the light stays steady, see a technician if the problem persists.

Cruise Control Light: This light reminds you when you have cruise control turned on, and will turn off when you transition back to normal driving. We don't recommend using the cruise control function in heavy traffic or inclement weather.
