Indicator and warning dashboard symbols are designed to communicate important information to help keep you out of harm's way. While some symbols appear when a specific feature is in use, others are meant to warn you when a serious issue is detected.

At St. Charles Nissan, our team of highly-skilled technicians compiled this helpful guide to the Nissan Frontier's dashboard symbols, ensuring you peace of mind whenever a light pops up on your dash.

Indicator Symbols

Yellow indicator symbols alert you to when a certain feature inside your Nissan Frontier is either engaged or when a non-emergency issue has been detected. While a yellow symbol doesn't always mean you're in immediate danger, you shouldn't ignore them as it might cause additional problems. Some common indicator symbols include:

Cruise Control - This light appears as the word, "CRUISE" in all capital letters and indicates that the cruise control is in use.

High Beams - This symbol looks like the profile of a headlight and indicates that your high beams are in use.

Hill Descent Control - This symbol looks like an SUV descending a slope and turns on whenever the Hill Descent Control feature is activated.

Malfunction Indicator - aka "check engine light" looks like the profile of an engine and turns on when an issue with the vehicle's emissions system is detected.

Slip Indicator - This symbol looks like the rear of a car with two wavy lines underneath. This light will turn on if the Traction Control or Vehicle Dynamic Control is activated.

Warning Symbols

These lights are designed to alert you when a potentially serious issue is detected with one of your Frontier's parts or internal systems. If one ever appears, you should take immediate action and avoid driving until the potential issue is resolved. Some common warning symbols include:

Automatic Transmission Oil Temp Indicator - This symbol looks like a thermometer inside of a toothed gear and appears when the temperature of your transmission's oil reaches a dangerous level. If this light pops up while driving, reduce your vehicle speed until the light turns off.

Brake Warning Light - This symbol spells the word, "BRAKE" in capital letters and appears when the parking brake is engaged. If it comes on while driving, it's warning that you're low on brake fluid. Pull over immediately to check the brake fluid level.

Charge Warning Light - This symbol looks like the top of a battery and warns there's a serious malfunction with the charging system. If it comes on, pull over and check the generator belt. If the belt is loose, broken, or if the light remains on, get your vehicle serviced immediately.

Engine Oil Pressure Indicator - This symbol looks like a dripping oil can and appears when your oil level dips below a safe level. If it comes on while driving, immediately pull over, stop the engine, and call a Nissan dealer near you.

Low Tire Pressure - This symbol looks like an exclamation point inside of a horseshoe and appears when at least one of your tires has low air pressure. Immediately pull over to check your tires.

Seat Belt - This symbol looks like a seated person with a safety belt and alerts you when your seat belt isn't properly fastened. It'll continue to chime if your front passenger doesn't have his/her belt fastened, either.
